Case 24: A 65 year old female with ESRD comes for a routine outpatient visit

Case Description

Our patient is a 65 years old lady with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) on hemodialysis 3 times a week.

She is on dialysis for the last 4 months after a progressive course of chronic kidney disease (CKD) secondary to diabetes and hypertension.

Past medical history:

  • Diabetic retinopathy for which she received laser therapy
  • Transient ischemic attack two years ago.

Medications:

  • Amlodipine 10 mg orally once a day,
  • aspirin 75 mg orally once a day,
  • gliclazide MR 60 mg once a day,
  • atorvastatin 40 mg orally once a day
  • one-alpha cholecalciferol 0.25 mcg orally once a day.
  • intravenous iron sucrose 100 mg every 2 weeks.

The patient feels generally well. She asks whether you think she is fine and whether there is anything you can do for her today.
