Surgical Operations

In 2017, Dr. Haithem Elhadi Babiker performed 6 complex craniofacial operations: 2 facial reconstructions and 4 cleft lip/palate cases with involvement of the junior surgeons for training. All were difficult cases that the local surgeons couldn’t perform independently.

Operating Microscope

SAMA successfully shipped an operating microscope donated by Shriner’s Hospital in Cincinnati,OH to Khartoum Dental Teaching Hospital . This device allows the surgeon to perform highly complex reconstruction Plastic and Maxillofacial surgery. The estimated value of the microscope is $15,000. The installation was personally overseen by Dr .Haithem M. ElhadiBabiker. It is the first operating microscope in the public sector in Sudan.

Education & Research :

Microvascular Surgery Training Workshop

Dr.HaithemM.Elhadi conducted 2 microvascular surgery workshops,one as part of the first Sudan Association of Maxillofacial Surgeons conference,and the other one at Khartoum Dental Teaching Hospital . This was the first ever Micro vascular training course to be held in Sudan , it was attended by both maxillofacial and plastic surgeons (15 total attendees). Zimmer Biomet, the U.S. medical device manufacturer, donated the required anastomosis teaching kits (26) and sponsored Dr. Haithem M .Elhadi’s airline ticket to Sudan. There was a dry lab workshop using the Zimmer kits and a wet lab on an animal (rabbit). These types of courses are held mainly in Europe; fairly expensive with a long waiting list to attend them. SAM A was pivotal in making this course possible in Sudan.

Plastic Surgery Observership at CCHMC

SAMA partially sponsored a 4 weeks plastic surgery observership at CCHM C. In this position the successful applicant to the full spectrum of plastic surgery in CCHMC (ranked 3rd best Children’s Hospital in the United States by US News and World Report 2017-2018).

Dr. Mohamed Ahmed Eltayeb Elhassan, plastic surgeon in Merowe,Northern State, was selected from amongst 13 applicants through a formal ,transparent selection process.


SAM A sponsored the travel and accommodation expenses of Samar Sharrif a medical student at the University of Cincinnati, to Sudan to conduct research in cleft lip and palate. She worked closely with NegoudElkhair cleft lip and palate patient society based in Khartoum Dental Teaching Hospital. They started a patient database for cleft patients, and Samar also conducted a survey of approximately 250 patients.
