Dr. Mohamed Abdelhamid, a trauma and critical care surgeon from the United States, arrived in Port Sudan for the third Dr. Isam Osman Humanitarian Mission of 2024. This mission aimed to deliver vital medical supplies and training to local healthcare professionals, providing much-needed support to Port Sudan’s medical community. Here’s a look at the milestones and impact of Dr. Abdelhamid’s journey.
Arrival and Welcoming
On October 30, 2024, Dr. Mohamed Abdelhamid arrived in Port Sudan, where the SAMA team met him at the airport. SAMA leadership and volunteers welcomed him warmly.
Purchasing and Preparing Supplies
The SAMA Port Sudan team procured essential medical supplies directly from local markets in Port Sudan. The supplies were transported to Dr. Bushra Ibnauf Center for Learning and Humanitarian Relief Support, serving as a centralized hub for sorting and organizing the delivery. Boxes and packages were carefully labeled with posters.

Training and Mentorship for Local Doctors
Dr. Abdelhamid’s mission extended beyond supplying resources; it focused on building the skills of Port Sudan’s healthcare providers. Over 50 local doctors, including medical officers, emergency medicine residents, and surgery residents, participated in hands-on training sessions designed to enhance their capacity in emergency response and trauma care.
The training covered essential topics such as Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) for emergency settings, a structured approach to managing trauma patients, and specialized ultrasound techniques, including the FAST (Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma) and eFAST (Extended FAST) examinations. These ultrasound skills are critical for quickly assessing internal injuries and guiding emergency interventions.
By empowering these frontline healthcare professionals with practical skills, Dr. Abdelhamid’s mentorship left a lasting impact on the local medical community, equipping them to deliver more effective, immediate care in critical situations.
