About Dr. Bushra Ibnauf
Dr. Bushra Mohammed Ibnauf Sulieman (1974–2023), Director of the SAMA Sudan Office and one of its founders and central pillars, was a Sudanese American gastroenterologist, educator, and humanitarian whose legacy within the Sudanese American Medical Association (SAMA) was profound and multidimensional. After returning permanently to Khartoum in 2014, he combined free and highly specialized patient care with deep commitment to education, mentorship, and institution-building, while providing steady leadership during some of Sudan’s most difficult years. His contributions extended well beyond the bedside: he played a pivotal role in SAMA’s COVID-19 response in 2020–2021, overseeing the delivery and distribution of lifesaving medical supplies, and he led and supervised major infrastructure investments in Sudan, ensuring that SAMA-donated funds were transformed into durable health-care capacity that would outlast any single mission. His work with the University of Khartoum, including support for the ECHO telementoring program, reflected his belief that education was the most sustainable form of service. Dr. Bushra was tragically killed in Khartoum on April 25, 2023, during the outbreak of war, leaving behind his wife and four children. His life, service, and enduring impact are documented here. Reflections from colleagues, students, friends, and loved ones can be read through the obituaries shared here. To preserve and extend his vision, SAMA established the Dr. Bushra Ibnauf Endowment Fund
About Dr. Bushra Ibnauf Endowment Fund
The Dr. Bushra Ibnauf Endowment Fund was established by the Sudanese American Medical Association (SAMA) to honor Dr. Bushra’s life by creating a sustainable, long-term foundation for the work of the Bushra Centers in Sudan. The Endowment is designed for lasting impact. It is carefully managed with strong financial oversight and a focus on building local capacity. Since its inception, the fund has grown steadily, reflecting disciplined stewardship and donor trust. All contributions are managed in accordance with SAMA’s financial policies and are reported annually to ensure full transparency. In 2026, the Endowment directly supported the expansion of staff at the Dr. Bushra Ibnauf Center in Port Sudan, a critical step that strengthened day-to-day operations, outreach, and program continuity during a period of national instability. By investing in people and systems on the ground, the Endowment helps ensure that the Center can serve communities consistently, adapt to changing needs, and remain operational even in times of crisis. For donors, this is an opportunity to contribute to a transparent, mission-driven fund that transforms generosity into enduring institutions—carrying forward Dr. Bushra’s vision of dignity, education, and sustainable care in Sudan.
