Why choose SAMA?

Our Profile

The Sudanese American Medical Association (SAMA) is a registered 501(c)(3) U.S.-based nonprofit organization established in 2008. Since its founding, SAMA has worked to deliver urgent humanitarian relief to the people of Sudan while simultaneously building the resilience of local communities to lead their recovery.

SAMA’s mission focuses on food security, outbreak response, and capacity building for sustainable development. By bridging the gap between international funders and local organizations, SAMA ensures that resources reach those who need them most. At its core, SAMA believes that local communities are the true drivers of change, and its role is to mentor, guide, and empower them to shape their own futures.

Following the war in Sudan (started in April 2023), SAMA has achieved a remarkable impact on the ground. The organization has provided more than 1.5 million meals to over 30,000 displaced people, saving countless lives during times of crisis. Its outbreak response programs have saved thousands of patients, while its training initiatives have equipped thousands of healthcare providers with the skills and knowledge necessary to serve their communities effectively. These efforts have been carried out across multiple regions of Sudan, including White Nile, Gedarif, Red Sea, Khartoum, Sinnar, and Darfur.

SAMA’s work is strengthened by its partnerships with both local and international organizations. In Sudan, SAMA collaborates with We’re All Values, Alrofaqaa Charitable Organization for Sustainable Development, Dawina Organization, Darfur Organization for Development and Human Resources, and Tabasheer for Aid and Development. Internationally, SAMA works closely with the World Health Organization’s Health Cluster in Sudan, the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN), Americares, and Project ECHO. Together with its partners, SAMA continues to build pathways for humanitarian relief and long-term community resilience in Sudan.

SAMA’s journey is far from complete. To expand our impact, we invite you to stand with us. Fund our programs, partner with us, or volunteer your skills—together, we can save lives, empower communities, and shape a brighter future for Sudan.

Our Value Proposition

SAMA is not just serving Sudan — we are Sudan. With over 17 years of deeply rooted presence, we work within communities, not outside them. Our model builds capacity, not dependency, by equipping local leaders to drive sustained transformation.

We operate at the intersection of humanitarian relief, health, and education, addressing urgent needs while investing in long-term solutions. Our approach is multi-sectoral, adaptive, and locally led — responding with integrity, excellence, and kindness wherever the need is greatest. When you partner with SAMA, you invest in a proven force for resilient, community-owned change in Sudan and beyond.

SAMA promotes peace through neutral, inclusive, and locally led health action that restores trust, dignity, and stability in communities affected by conflict. Working through Sudanese partners across all regions — including areas under different authorities such as SAF, RSF, and SLM — SAMA ensures that assistance is guided by human need rather than geography or control. These partnerships embody our belief that local organizations and professionals are central to sustainable peace. By strengthening their capacity, we help communities rebuild systems of care and cooperation from within.

During the cholera outbreak, SAMA partnered with health actors in White Nile and Khartoum (SAF-controlled) and Tawila, North Darfur (RSF and SLM-controlled) to support case management. This cross-line response demonstrated that health can serve as common ground amid division — enabling collaboration between communities that otherwise have no channels of communication.

Through our localization model, SAMA empowers trusted Sudanese organizations to lead implementation. This approach builds self-reliance, accountability, and social cohesion, reducing dependency on external actors and allowing communities to define their own recovery. SAMA’s work contributes to what we call “everyday peace” — the peace that grows when people can access care safely, participate in rebuilding their communities, and experience fairness across lines of control.

Guided by neutrality and local ownership, SAMA turns healthcare into a bridge for solidarity and coexistence, proving that local action in health is a pathway to national healing and peace.
