Medical Supplies Program

Lifesaving Support Since 2015

The Sudanese American Medical Association (SAMA) launched its Medical Supplies Program in 2015 with a mission to deliver high-impact medical aid to Sudanese communities. Through strong partnerships and a license from the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), SAMA was able to ship critical medical equipment and consumables, even during times of international sanctions.

Between 2015 and 2023, SAMA shipped six containers of medical supplies, valued at nearly $2 million and weighing over 30 metric tonnes, reaching more than 40 hospitals and health centers across six states in Sudan. For more details, click here.

What Happened with the Sixth Container

2026 Direction: Reviving Importation Through Localization

Following the challenges experienced with SAMA’s sixth container, SAMA has temporarily paused all container-based medical supply shipments until conditions allow for more transparent, reliable, and effective delivery.

In 2026, SAMA plans to revive the medical supplies importation program by relying on trusted local partners, building on the localization approach adopted after the war in Sudan, which proved faster and more effective in reaching people in need. After the challenges faced with SAMA’s sixth container, this model will enable capable local actors to navigate the context, coordinate with authorities, and lead customs clearance—ensuring medical supplies are delivered transparently, efficiently, and with full accountability.

Partners

Sudanese-American Relief and Development Center

The Sudanese American Medical Association is proud to announce a strategic partnership with The Sudanese-American Relief and Development Center (SARC) to strengthen and expand the delivery of medical supplies to Sudan.

SARC is a U.S.-based nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing knowledge exchange, research, and cross-cultural engagement between the United States and Sudan. In addition to its academic and development mission, SARC brings extensive operational experience in procuring and transporting medical supplies to Sudan. The organization has developed strong familiarity with local regulations, customs clearance processes, and on-the-ground logistical challenges, enabling efficient and compliant delivery of essential medical resources.

Through this partnership, SAMA will leverage SARC’s regulatory expertise, supply chain knowledge, and established local networks to enhance its medical supplies program. This collaboration will improve procurement efficiency, streamline shipment processes, and ensure that life-saving medications and equipment reach healthcare facilities and vulnerable communities in a timely and effective manner.

Together, SAMA and SARC aim to build a more resilient and responsive medical supply pipeline to support Sudan’s urgent healthcare needs.

Aleshrag Organization for Development and Construction

SAMA is partnering with Aleshrag Organization for Development and Construction (ADC) as a trusted local implementing partner. ADC brings strong field presence, local relationships, and operational capacity in eastern Sudan, enabling effective coordination with authorities and health facilities. Through this partnership, ADC will support customs clearance, in-country logistics, and the safe distribution of medical supplies to priority hospitals and primary healthcare centers, while SAMA provides technical oversight, monitoring, and donor reporting. Together, SAMA and ADC aim to ensure that lifesaving supplies reach communities in Gedarif, Kassala, and the Red Sea States.
