Serving Humanity in Darfur
For more than two decades, Darfur has endured one of the world’s most complex and protracted humanitarian crises. Families across the region continue to face the lasting consequences of conflict and displacement, leaving millions in need of sustained humanitarian support.
The war that erupted in April 2023 has further compounded these challenges, triggering a new wave of suffering across Darfur. Entire communities have been uprooted, and the region is witnessing the devastating consequences of death, displacement, hunger, and disease. As access to food, clean water, and medical care becomes increasingly limited, the humanitarian needs have reached alarming levels.
Amid this unfolding crisis, the Sudanese American Medical Association (SAMA) stands with the people of Darfur — committed to saving lives, and alleviating suffering. Wherever there is need, SAMA is there — regardless of geography, ethnicity, religion, or politics.
SAMA’s approach relies on localization and the empowerment of local communities. We believe that sustainable impact comes from within — by partnering with trusted local organizations that understand the context, the people, and the challenges on the ground. Through these partnerships, SAMA ensures that aid reaches those who need it most, strengthens local capacity, and promotes dignity and resilience within affected communities.
Our Humanitarian Focus
- Food Distribution: Providing lifesaving food assistance to displaced and vulnerable families in Darfur.
- Healthcare Response: Supporting outbreak control and emergency medical care.
Our Approach
SAMA’s work in Darfur is guided by principles that ensure effective, transparent, and community-centered humanitarian action:
- Localization: We work through and with nationally registered local organizations, empowering communities to lead their own recovery and ensuring that interventions are contextually relevant and sustainable.
- Safety and Neutrality: All SAMA activities are conducted with strict political neutrality, prioritizing the safety of both aid workers and beneficiaries while respecting local dynamics.
- Local Monitoring and Evaluation: Our on-the-ground M&E staff coordinate directly with implementing partners to monitor activities, ensure accurate reporting, and maintain full compliance with donor requirements.
- Visual Documentation: SAMA prioritizes visual documentation of field activities to promote transparency, share impact stories, and highlight the resilience of the communities we serve.
