El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, is a historically significant city in western Sudan. Today, it is a city under siege — surrounded by armed conflict, cut off from humanitarian aid, and collapsing under the weight of mass displacement.
Tens of thousands of families have sought refuge in El Fasher, escaping violence in surrounding areas. But with fighting closing in, El Fasher has become both a trap and a final refuge.
What Famine Under Siege Looks Like in El Fasher
- Families are feeding on animal fodder and tree leaves — the only “food” left.
- Mothers are skipping meals for days so their children can survive.
- Children are dying of malnutrition, their bodies too weak to cry.
- No aid can enter — all routes are blocked by conflict.
- Markets have vanished — shelves are empty, and even a small amount of grain is unaffordable.
- Mass displacement within the city, with IDP camps overwhelmed and unsupported.
