A devastating cholera outbreak is sweeping through Omdurman, one of the most densely populated cities in Sudan, triggering a public health emergency. The crisis is deepening daily, made worse by ongoing conflict that has ravaged water systems, sanitation services, and medical infrastructure. Hundreds of lives are at immediate risk—and your support is urgently needed.
What’s Happening on the Ground?
- Over 570 patients were treated at just two MSF-supported centers in Omdurman in the span of five days (May 17–21).
- On a single day, Al-Naw Teaching Hospital received 521 new cholera cases and reported 9 deaths.
- Across Khartoum State, over 2,500 cholera infections have been recorded as of May 22—and the numbers are rising rapidly.
- Since the outbreak began in August 2024, Sudan has seen over 9,500 confirmed cholera cases and 315 deaths nationwide.
SAMA’s Urgent Response
In partnership with our trusted humanitarian partner, We Are All Values (WAV), the Sudanese American Medical Association (SAMA) is launching a rapid response to save lives in Omdurman:
- $5,000 has been allocated to supply emergency medical aid.
- We are delivering nearly 8,000 drips of Ringer’s lactate, a vital fluid used to rehydrate cholera patients and prevent death.
- Our goal is to stabilize hundreds of severe cases and reduce preventable fatalities in the hardest-hit areas.
