Since 2010, SAMA’s observership program has connected Sudanese residency applicants with experienced Sudanese-American physicians across the United States. This initiative provides invaluable exposure to the U.S. healthcare system, enabling participants to gain practical clinical experience and strengthen their residency applications.

• 2013: Facilitated 35 observerships across various specialties, including cardiology, pediatrics, and internal medicine.
• 2015: Reached a record 49 placements, providing tailored mentorship and clinical exposure.
• 2016: Partnered with prominent institutions such as Indiana University and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, achieving 50 placements.

• Introduced in 2013, SAMA’s research trainee positions have empowered Sudanese physicians to work on impactful projects at renowned U.S. institutions.

• 2013: Launched 5 research trainee positions at institutions like the Mayo Clinic.
• 2015: Expanded to 6 positions, fostering participants’ academic and clinical growth.

In 2012, SAMA initiated workshops to help residency applicants excel in U.S. residency interviews. These workshops feature mock interviews, personalized feedback, and strategies to navigate competitive processes.

• 2015: Hosted workshops in Detroit and Chicago, with 52 and 33 participants, respectively.
• 2016: The Chicago workshop had 47 attendees and received glowing reviews for its effectiveness in preparing candidates.

• Workshop Table Discussions: Participants collaborated in group activities, honing communication skills and preparing responses to common residency interview questions.
• Engaged Audience: Young physicians and residency applicants benefited from tailored content and interactive sessions.
• Group Photo: The workshop concluded with a group photo, symbolizing the collective drive of participants and mentors.

Since 2010, SAMA has supported residency applicants by offering free personal statement reviews. This service ensures applicants effectively highlight their unique strengths and aspirations.

• 2013: Reviewed 25 personal statements, providing detailed and actionable feedback.
• 2015: Expanded the service to review 46 statements, helping applicants craft compelling narratives.
