Context
First-generation immigrant children face unique challenges in applying to US medical schools, such as lack of parental guidance, limited resources, and potential bias. The Sudanese American Medical Association (SAMA) aims to support these students through mentorship, informational sessions, shadowing opportunities, test preparation, and networking events.
SAMA’s inclusive approach connects students with medical professionals who offer guidance based on their experiences. Future plans include providing advice on navigating cultural expectations alongside career goals, thereby creating a supportive environment to enhance students’ preparation for medical school applications. This step-by-step approach will benefit students from diverse backgrounds.
