Yosra from Juba
5-year-old Yosra fell ill with fever and drenching sweats, her glands were swollen and she was quickly losing weight. She had tests run in her hometown of Juba in South Sudan and was told that she had too many white cells and needed to go elsewhere for treatment.
In March 2023, she arrived in Khartoum and was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia; cancer of the blood cells. Yosra and her mother were distraught, but they refused to surrender to despair; she clung to hope, praying that she would receive treatment and get better.
Then the war broke out, and the hospital that was treating them became a battle zone. Yosra had to flee with her parents to Wad Medani in Gezira state; where she hoped to continue her cancer treatment. Now in Wad Medani, Yosra faces the harsh reality of a shortage of food, shelter, and cancer treatment.
