Trauma ECHO Best Case Presenter
Alaa Mohammed, MBBS, MRCSI
SAMA is delighted to announce the recipient of the Trauma ECHO Best Case Presentation Award, Dr. Alaa Yousif Yagoob Mohammed.
Dr. Alaa Mohammed was born in Al-Fashir, North Darfur. She graduated from the University of Al-Fashir in 2014 and completed her membership of the Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland in 2019. Little did she know that her skills would be put to the ultimate test. Four months before the war, Dr. Alaa was in Saudi Arabia with her family. When the war broke out, she had the choice to return to the safety of Saudi Arabia or stay in Omdurman amidst a heinous war.
Dr. Alaa chose to stay and respond to the call of duty, she served in Alnau Hospital in Omdurman. She was undeterred by the threat to her life and livelihood, the shortage of medical supplies, or the lack of pay. For two months, she stood as the only surgeon in the hospital.
Alaa believes that she is fortunate that her destiny led her to be a source of hope and healing. In her words, “Every successful operation brought a profound sense of accomplishment. Nothing more than a grateful patient with a wide smile”
As Dr. Alaa reflects on her story, she remains optimistic about Sudan’s future. She believes that the Sudanese spirit will prevail, and the nation will rebuild to be better than before.
Dr. Alaa volunteered to present a case in the Trauma ECHO, SAMA’s virtual learning program delivered from Dr. Bushra Ibnauf Center for Learning in Port Sudan, where she shared her experience in managing traumatic war injuries with global subject matters in trauma surgery. She showed exceptional presentation skills, which qualified her to receive the award. To view her presentation click here.
