Welcome to the SAMA Winter Award Ceremony, an evening dedicated to celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Isam Osman. This event honors Dr. Osman’s excellence in the field of surgery, his impactful mentorship and leadership, and his significant humanitarian contributions to Sudan.

About Dr. Isam Osman
Dr. Isam Osman (Rahmat Allah Aleyhu) was a consultant vascular surgeon who headed the Vascular and Endovascular Department and Operating Rooms at King Saud Medical City in Riyadh, the largest Ministry of Health hospital in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). He was a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) in Glasgow and London and was the first Royal College of Surgeons England Country Advisor for KSA.
Outside of his day-to-day work, among many other endeavors, Dr. Osman played a major role in establishing the Sudanese Association of Vascular Surgeons, which aims to promote vascular well-being in Sudan through academic activities, training, support, and promotion. He was elected as the first President of the Association shortly after its foundation.
When war broke out in Sudan in April 2023, Dr. Osman played a leading role in humanitarian relief working through the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center.
Dr. Osman passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 29, 2023, six days after returning from a humanitarian mission to Port Sudan, where he performed challenging surgeries and distributed medical aid to those suffering the effects of the war.

Dr. Isam Osman Award for the Outstanding Surgeon

Dr. Abdalla Zarroug is a distinguished pediatric surgeon, Professor of Surgery, and Clinical Service Chief at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. With over 100 publications, he has advanced pediatric surgery globally, becoming the first African-American pediatric surgeon at both the Mayo Clinic and in Minnesota. His mentorship has supported numerous Sudanese graduates and pediatric surgeons across the U.S. As Surgeon-in-Chief in Omaha, Nebraska, Dr. Zarroug revitalized pediatric surgery in the region. His humanitarian work includes establishing a pediatric surgery fellowship in Sudan and leading missions to provide essential equipment and care to underserved communities.

Emergency physician, Ras-Al Khaimah, UAE
Dr. Toosy is an Emergency physician (FRCEM/CCT) and previous surgical trainee (FRCS(Ed)) with extensive experience in clinical, educational & leadership roles in the UK & UAE. He is a current instructor of ATLS & FCCS and a former ALS & APLS instructor.
He is involved with several organizations internationally including the Emirates Society of Emergency Medicine, the Pakistan Society of EM strategic committee, and the WHO-IFEM collaborative committee.
In addition to this particular role,he had a close personal friendship and professional association with the late Isam Osman with shared mutual admiration.
His current interests include resuscitation, trauma, and education particularly the use of simulation in training.
Dr. Abdelaziz Suliman
Senior Consultant in Vascular Surgery
Dr. Abdelaziz Suliman has been practicing vascular surgery for more than two decades in Sudan and has the expertise and knowledge of the status of this specialty in Sudan. Dr. Suliman will describe Dr. Isam Osman’s impact on the specialty in Sudan.
Dr. Ahmed Gaweesh is a Consultant in Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Interventions in Egypt and the UAE and a Senior Lecturer with a Doctorate in Vascular Surgery from Alexandria University. He serves as Vice President of the Egypt African Venous & Lymphatic Association (EAVLA) and is an Executive Board Member of the European College of Phlebology (ECoP).
Dr. Sara Abdelgalil, MBBS, MTROPAED, DTCH, MRCPCH, FRCPCH, is a dedicated leader in Pediatric Allergy, strongly committed to advocating for the development and well-being of children and young people. As an Associate Professor, Dr. Sara Abdelgalil combines extensive clinical expertise with a passion for humanitarian work, particularly within diaspora communities. Recognized as an expert in humanitarian engagement, Dr. Sara Abdelgalil has served as a Strategic Business Engagement (SBE) lead during times of conflict, making significant contributions to the field and improving care and outcomes for vulnerable populations.
