Context
Between 15 and 17 August 2025, heavy rains triggered severe flooding across villages 04, 05, 06, 07, and 10 in Al Fao locality, Gedaref State. The floods caused extensive destruction of homes and infrastructure, leaving families displaced and in urgent need of assistance. According to an inter-agency rapid needs assessment conducted on 24 August 2025, the floods damaged or destroyed more than 900 houses and 756 latrines, while key infrastructure such as water stations, health facilities, and schools were also affected. Stagnant water and the collapse of sanitation systems have increased health risks, particularly outbreaks of waterborne diseases such as diarrhea, typhoid, and malaria.
The impact on livelihoods has been devastating. Floods washed away crops and livestock, leaving families with no immediate food sources. Prices for basic commodities have spiked by 20% or more, while markets are either disrupted or inaccessible due to damaged roads. In villages such as 05, 06, 07, and 10, assessments found that nearly 50% of households could only cover food needs for one week. Vulnerable groups, including women-headed households, the elderly, children, and persons with disabilities, face heightened risks as they struggle to meet daily needs in the aftermath of the disaster.
The crisis in Al Fao represents a humanitarian emergency. Without immediate support, families risk spiraling deeper into hunger, malnutrition, and disease, exacerbating an already fragile situation.
