Overview
When war broke out in April 2023, intense fighting in Khartoum, Darfur, Kordofan, Gezira, and other regions forced millions to flee their homes. Because White Nile State remained relatively less affected by direct fighting, it became a key refuge, receiving large numbers of displaced families from Khartoum and surrounding conflict-affected states, in addition to long-established refugee populations.
The rapid influx is overwhelming an already fragile healthcare system. Facilities in towns such as Kosti are serving host communities alongside large numbers of displaced people, amid severe shortages of staff, supplies, and reliable power. Maternal and reproductive health services are particularly affected, and overcrowded conditions have contributed to disease outbreaks, further endangering women and children.
In this context, focused women’s health programming in White Nile State is urgently needed to respond to the disproportionate impact of Sudan’s ongoing war on women and girls, especially within displacement camps where barriers to care are significant.
