Honoring a Legacy of Service
The Dr. Bushra Ibnauf Lifetime Achievement Award was established by the Sudanese American Medical Association (SAMA) to honor physicians whose lives and careers reflect an exceptional commitment to serving the people of Sudan.
The award commemorates the legacy of Dr. Bushra Ibnauf, SAMA’s beloved co-founder and Sudan Office Director, who dedicated his life to strengthening healthcare and supporting communities across Sudan. Until his passing on April 25, 2023, Dr. Bushra remained deeply committed to serving patients, supporting healthcare professionals, and responding to the needs of communities, even in the face of immense challenges.
For Dr. Bushra, medicine was more than a profession. It was a responsibility to stand with people when they needed support most. His leadership, compassion, courage, and unwavering commitment to humanitarian service continue to inspire Sudanese healthcare professionals and volunteers.
The Lifetime Achievement Award was created to carry that legacy forward. It recognizes physicians who have demonstrated years of sustained service, medical excellence, courageous leadership, and an enduring commitment to the health and dignity of communities in Sudan.
The award is reserved for individuals who have remained present and impactful through difficult circumstances—physicians who have continued to serve when doing so required extraordinary resilience and sacrifice.
The 2026 Lifetime Achievement Award
In recognition of this spirit of service, SAMA is honored to announce that the Dr. Bushra Ibnauf Lifetime Achievement Award 2026 has been awarded to Dr. Safa Ali Mohammed Yousif, General Manager and Consultant Obstetrician at Al-Saudi Maternity Hospital in Omdurman.
Dr. Safa has demonstrated extraordinary courage, leadership, and commitment to sustaining maternal and emergency healthcare services in Sudan during one of the country’s most difficult periods.
Despite the dangers of war and repeated attacks on healthcare infrastructure, she remained on the front lines, leading efforts to restore hospital services and ensure continued access to safe deliveries, emergency obstetric care, and surgical services for displaced and vulnerable populations.
A Commitment to Women and Families
Throughout the conflict, Dr. Safa’s work extended beyond hospital-based care. She spearheaded mobile clinics serving women in IDP camps and underserved areas, helping bring essential maternal healthcare directly to communities facing displacement and limited access to medical services.
She also established emergency obstetric response systems and developed safe referral pathways for survivors of sexual violence, helping strengthen access to essential and often lifesaving services for women affected by conflict.
Her leadership has also been critical in mobilizing humanitarian and fundraising support from local and international organizations. These efforts helped secure essential medicines, medical equipment, and lifesaving supplies needed to sustain maternal and child healthcare services across affected communities.
Beyond Clinical Care
Dr. Safa’s contribution extends beyond emergency response and clinical care. She has supported reproductive health education, immunization campaigns, and the mentorship of healthcare professionals, while collaborating with organizations including UNFPA and Doctors Without Borders.
Through these efforts, she has demonstrated a model of leadership rooted not only in medical expertise, but also in service, advocacy, collaboration, and a deep commitment to the communities she serves.
Carrying the Legacy Forward
The Dr. Bushra Ibnauf Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes physicians who embody the same values that defined Dr. Bushra’s life and service: compassion, courage, excellence, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to Sudan.
Dr. Safa’s continued presence and service during conflict reflect precisely the spirit this award was created to honor.
Through her courage and steadfast dedication to women and families affected by conflict, she has demonstrated that humanitarian leadership means more than responding to a crisis. It means remaining present, protecting dignity, restoring hope, and working to ensure that essential healthcare remains available even under the most difficult circumstances.
Dr. Safa Ali Mohammed Yousif embodies the very spirit of the Dr. Bushra Ibnauf Lifetime Achievement Award: medical excellence, humanitarian service, courageous leadership, and an unwavering commitment to protecting the health and dignity of Sudanese women and families.
SAMA extends its deepest congratulations to Dr. Safa Ali Mohammed Yousif on this well-deserved recognition and honors her continued service to the people of Sudan.
