Background
Infectious Disease ECHO will connect medical professionals in Juba, South Sudan and Port Sudan, Sudan, and Sub-Saharan Africa with global experts in Project ECHO “All teach – All learn” sessions.
This will be the first activity launched by Dr. Bushra Ibnauf Center for Learning in Juba, South Sudan. The purpose of this program is to improve the capacity of healthcare providers treating HIV, TB, and HBV. This can be achieved by incorporating the current guidelines and recent updates in the local context. The program will address these three diseases screening, diagnosis, management, and health promotion and prevention of concomitant co-morbidities.
TB has proven to be the leading cause of premature death contributing to more than 40% of deaths among HIV-infected individuals, as well as among the most vulnerable population, those below the poverty line, with the current outstanding incidence of more than 140 people per 100,000 being positive for TB in South Sudan.
Subject Matter Experts will be recruited from across the globe, leveraging SAMA’s global reach. Each session will include a case presentation by a medical professional treating patients with infectious disease.

Professor Ihab B. Abdalrahman was born in Omdurman, Sudan, and graduated from the University of Khartoum in 1994. On graduation, he was awarded the Professor Dauod Mustafa Prize for best student in Internal Medicine. He completed his postgraduate medical training in Sudan and earned his MD (Doctorate in Medicine) from the University of Khartoum in 1999. He then moved to the United States where he completed his Internal Medicine residency. In 2008, he co-founded SAMA with Dr. Bushra Ibnauf to serve those in need. He then returned to Sudan and joined the teaching faculty at the University of Khartoum. From 2013 to 2018, Dr. Ihab “Tarawa” served as the deputy director of Soba University Hospital where he raised funds to expand the capacity of the Intensive Care Unit from 2 to 8 beds, alongside 5 High dependency care unit beds. In 2019, he was appointed to the position of secretary general of the Sudanese Medical Specialization Board, the body that governs and implements postgraduate medical training in Sudan, where he launched the critical care fellowship program. In 2022, Dr. Ihab was promoted to the rank of Professor of Medicine at the University of Khartoum and to the position of Director General for Soba University Hospital.
Dr. Malek Deng

Dr. Malek Santo Deng is a Family Medicine Specialist with diverse experience in internal medicine, public health, occupational health and safety, and Human resource management, Dr Malek has more than 22 years of experience in health care management, workforce management, and Occupational Health and Safety Specialist. Currently, Dr Malek works as a Human Resource and Health Specialist for the Health Pooled Funds Project supervising eight states and fifty-five counties with over 9000 government and humanitarian employees. Dr Malek has served as Senior Inspector at the Ministry of Health and currently serves as a Director General for International Health and Coordination, with the Ministry of Health, Republic of South Sudan, Juba.
Previously, he worked for Mayo Clinic Hospital in the State of Arizona as a Family Medicine Physician, Scottsdale Health Care Medical Centre in Scottsdale Arizona, and British Petroleum (BP) in the Gulf of Mexico as an Occupational Health and Safety Consultant, He has worked with USA Government in Fallujah Iraq with Shield Oil Company as Occupational Health and Safety Consultant. Dr Malek has also worked as a Health Coordinator with the CDC in Panama and John Hopkin Medical Centre in Dallas Taxis USA as a Family Medicine physician.
Dr Malek graduated from Grand Canyon University with a Master’s in Family Medicine and Public Health, an MBA in Health Care Management with a focus on workforce development from the University of Phoenix and bachelor’s degree in Internal Medicine from the University of Arizona, and an associate’s degree in occupational health studies in Anthem College in Phoenix Arizona. Dr. Kailani graduated from medical school in Sudan and completed his internal medicine residency in New York. He went on to pursue further studies, earning a fellowship in infectious disease and a Master of Public Health at Dartmouth. He is board certified in both internal medicine and infectious disease.
Throughout his career, Dr. Kailani has worked with Doctors Without Borders in several African countries, including Darfur, South Sudan (Abyei), Ethiopia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. His dedicated efforts during the Ebola outbreak in West Africa (Liberia and Sierra Leone) from 2014 to 2016 earned him the Queen Elizabeth Medal.
Dr. Kailani has also participated in the Human Resources for Health (HRH) program, a collaboration between US universities and the Rwandan Ministry of Health. As a visiting faculty member at the University of Rwanda, he supported the internal medicine residency program.
Currently, Dr. Kailani is working with the AMPATH program in Kenya. He holds a joint position as a visiting clinical assistant professor of medicine at Indiana University in the United States and Moi University in Kenya.
Dr Abdel Hadi graduated from the faculty of medicine university of Khartoum, completed his residency and postgraduate specialist training in teaching hospitals in UK and joined HMC in 2017.
Besides clinical roles at HMC, Dr Abdel Hadi is actively involved in medical education both for the residency and fellowship training programs as well as academic research with several funded local and national projects

Dr Mas Chaponda is a Senior Consultant in Infectious Diseases at Hamad Medical Corporation, Qatar. He joined HMC in 2020 from the UK where he previously worked as a consultant in Infectious Diseases and Senior Lecturer at the University of Liverpool as well as Research fellow at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. Dr Chaponda trained in General Medicine, Infectious Diseases and Clinical Pharmacology at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. His interests include HIV, blood borne viruses, TB, bacterial infections and clinical trials.

Dr. Nagi Elsidig is a Consultant in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital (SQUH). He graduated from the University of Khartoum and completed his pediatric residency in Oman. He obtained membership in the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) in 2010 and completed the Saudi Pediatric Infectious Diseases Fellowship in 2013. Dr. Elsidig is an active contributor to the field, having published several papers and participated in developing local and regional pediatric infectious diseases protocols and guidelines. He is also a dedicated educator, teaching at Sultan Qaboos University College of Medicine and Health Sciences and the Oman Medical Specialty Board.
Dr. Salma Barakat

Dr. Salma Barakat Mohamed Mudawi is a Sudanese consultant in gastroenterology and hepatology with extensive international experience. She holds qualifications including an MBBS, MD, MRCP (UK), FRCP (Glasgow), and MRCP Gastroenterology, among others. Dr. Mudawi has served as a locum consultant in several NHS hospitals in the UK, including the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust and North Cumbria University Hospital. Her responsibilities have spanned ward rounds, outpatient clinics, endoscopy, and teaching junior doctors.
Dr. Mudawi has also worked in the UAE and Sudan, notably at the Ibn Sina Hospital, where she contributed to managing gastrointestinal and liver diseases. Her academic work includes supervising MD theses and contributing to research in areas such as liver disease and hepatitis. She has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and presented her findings at international conferences. Her teaching and management roles reflect her dedication to both clinical practice and academic medicine.
Dr. Hala Abdalla

Dr. Hala Abdalla is a Consultant Physician, Gastroenterologist, and Hepatologist at the National Centre for GI and Liver Disease in Sudan. She completed her MBBS at the University of Khartoum in 2003, followed by an MD in Internal Medicine from the Sudan Medical Specialization Board (SMSB) in 2013. Dr. Abdalla obtained her MRCP in 2014, completed her Gastroenterology Fellowship in 2016, and earned her FRCP in 2020.
Dr. Abdalla is an active member of the HBV Elimination Committee and is deeply committed to combating the hepatitis B virus (HBV), a pressing issue in Sudan, where it is highly prevalent. She regularly leads awareness and orientation sessions for the public and healthcare professionals, addressing the common late-stage presentations of HBV, including cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), particularly in young individuals.
Her professional interests include liver diseases and transplantation, and she has contributed significantly to research in these areas. In addition to her clinical and research roles, Dr. Abdalla is an advocate for patient rights and takes pride in mentoring junior doctors, helping shape the next generation of healthcare professionals in Sudan.
